Cocktails and Conversations: Thomas Balsley and Matt Shaw

Participants will hear the 2015 National ASLA Design Medal recipient speak about the processes his firm employs on a range of award-winning public spaces that are redefining the public realm of NYC and other cities throughout the U.S. Moderator Matt Shaw, the newly installed Senior Editor of Architect’s Newspaper, will explore the firm’s response to current forces and issues of stewardship, social, economic and environmental sustainability, resiliency, and walkable livable cities. Well-known local projects highlighted will include the new plaza at 51 Astor Place, Capitol Plaza and Hunter’s Point South Park. Mr. Balsley will reveal how the firm has applied successful pre-Sandy strategies for resiliency to two of New York’s newest waterfront parks and explore the firm’s design approach to these project typologies – an alchemy of environmentalism, urbanism, recreation, culture, art and heritage.
